Thousands of users download music from the service everyday and what makes it great is its vast collection of songs as well as the ability to let you sync your music across all of your devices. Let’s get started:
We have broken down the guide into two sections. The first section teaches how to redownload purchased music from iTunes on an iOS device such as an iPhone or an iPad and the second section has instructions on how you can download your iTunes music on your Windows PC or Mac.
Depending on what device you wish to download your music on, you can follow the following sections accordingly. In case you face any issues while downloading the music, please proceed to the tips section given at the end of the guide to troubleshoot the issues.
Part 1. Download Purchased Music from iTunes on an iPhone/iPad
It is pretty easy to download purchased iTunes music on an iOS-based device as your device already has the iTunes app that will let you download whatever content you buy on your device. All that you need to do is fire up the app and trigger it to download your content.
The following is how you can go about doing it on your iPhone or iPad:
Step 1: Launch the iTunes Store app on your iOS device by tapping on the app icon on your springboard. The app should launch on your device.
Step 2: You will likely not be on the screen where you should be when the app launches. Therefore, you need to change the screen you are on right now. At the bottom of your screen, you will see several tabs that you can tap on. Find and tap on the tab that says More as that is where the download option is located.
Step 3: When you tap on the More option, you will be given extra options that were not already available on the main screen of the app. From the options available to you, tap on the one that says Purchased. That is where all of your purchased content from iTunes is located.
Step 4: On the following screen, the app will ask what purchased content you would like to access. Since you wish to download your purchased music, tap on the option that says Music and it will let you access your music tracks.
Step 5: The screen that follows will show all of the music tracks you have ever purchased from the iTunes Store. At the top of your screen, tap on All so that all of your music tracks are shown. Then, tap on All Songs to view your songs list.
Step 6: Here is where you can see all of your purchased music content. You can sort the tracks by Most Recent, Name, and Artist Name. You now have two options to download the content to your device. If you wish to download all the songs to your device, you can tap on the option that says Download All at the top-right corner of your screen.
If you wish to selectively download music to your device, then scroll through the list, find the track you want to download, and tap on the cloud icon next to the song name and the song will begin to download on your device. You can perform these steps for all the songs that you wish to download to your device.
Once the purchased music has been successfully downloaded to your iPhone or iPad, you can access it using the Music app on your device. You can then play it as many times as you want without any restrictions and even when you are offline.
Part 2. Download Purchased Music from iTunes on a PC/Mac
If you would prefer to download your purchased music on your desktop machine such as a Windows PC or a Mac, this section will teach you how to do it. Just like the iOS device procedure, the procedure to download content from iTunes on a desktop is equally easy.
The following is how you do it:
Step 1: On your Windows PC or Mac, download and install the latest version of the iTunes app.
Step 2: After you have installed the iTunes app, launch the app on your computer. Windows users can double-click on the iTunes shortcut and Mac users can click on the iTunes icon in Launchpad to launch the app.
Step 3: When the iTunes app launches, you will be on the library screen where you can view the content you have in your iTunes libraries. To access the iTunes Store where your purchases are located, click on the option that says Store in the app.
Step 4: It will take a few moments to load the store screen on your computer. Ensure the dropdown menu at the top says Music. On the right-hand side of your screen, you will find several options related to your iTunes account. Among them is the option called Purchased that you need to click on to access your purchased music.
Step 5: On the following screen, you will find the music tracks you have purchased from iTunes. From the top tabs, select the option that says Not in My Library so only those tracks that are not already downloaded are shown on your screen. You may then click on Albums or Songs depending on how you want to view your content.
Click on the cloud icon next to your songs and they will be downloaded to your computer. The downloaded songs will be available to listen to in the iTunes app on your Windows PC or Mac.
While the above procedures should work just fine to help you download your purchased music files, sometimes you may face issues and iTunes will not let you download your content to your devices. If you are facing such a situation and are unable to get access to the content that you have paid for, the following tips will be of great use to you. They will let you fix if you have made any mistakes while trying to access your content.
Tip 1. Use the Account You Used to Make Purchases
This one goes without saying. If you have purchased music from iTunes using one ID and you are using another ID to access the purchased content, iTunes will not let you do it. Each item that you purchase from iTunes is associated with an iTunes account and you must use that account to access those purchases in the future.
Therefore, make sure the account you are using to access your purchases is the one that was used to make those purchases. Here’s how you can view your account ID:
Step 1: Launch the iTunes app on your computer and click on Account followed by View My Account at the top.
Step 2: Verify your Apple account ID on the following screen.
Tip 2. Ensure You Have Not Exceeded The Limit
iTunes allows you to access your purchased content on up to 10 of your devices. If you have got loads of Apple devices and are trying to access your content on the 11th device, it will not work. It is simply because you have exceeded the device limit set by iTunes.
However, that does not mean you cannot get your purchased content on your device. All you have to do is remove your Apple account from the devices that you do not use and those will bring the number of your device down and under the limitations. That will then let you access your purchased music on your device.
Tip 3. Unhide Purchases If You Can’t See Them
One of the lesser known features of iTunes is that it allows you to hide the purchases you have made on its store. What that means is you can hide any content you do not want for others to see on your device in the iTunes app. If you have unknowingly hidden your purchased music, you will likely not see it in the app and that will left you wondering where your content’s gone as it is nowhere to be found. Well, it is in there actually and all you need to do is unhide it to be able to view it.
Unhiding the hidden songs in iTunes is a pretty easy process and the following is how you do it:
Step 1: Launch the iTunes app on your computer and click on the Store link to open the iTunes Store on your machine.
Step 2: When the store screen opens in the app, find and click on the option that says Account under Music Quick Links in the right-hand side of the app screen. It will let you access your iTunes account settings panel.
Step 3: On the screen that follows, find and click on the option that says Manage next to Hidden Purchases. It should be under the iTunes in the Cloud section.
Step 4: You should be able to view the purchases you have made hidden. Hover your mouse over your music files and click on Unhide to unhide your files.
Once unhidden, the songs will instantly be available for viewing and downloading in the iTunes app on your computer. You may then follow the standard procedure for downloading songs from iTunes to download your content.
Tip 4. Content Is No Longer Available for Download
Sometimes it could happen that the content you are trying to download is no longer available in the iTunes Store for you to download. This could happen due to many reasons. Maybe the author of the songs did not want to keep their content or maybe there were some policy violations. Regardless of the reasoning, if the content has been removed, you will not be able to download it on your devices.
This usually happens when you download your content after months or years since you bought it from the store. That is why it is recommended that you download your stuff as soon as you buy it just in case it does not get lost. You may reach out to Apple if you are not sure about the unavailable content.
Tip 5. Change Country to What It Was
In order to access some exclusive content, what some users do is they change the country in the iTunes app on their devices. When the country changes in your iTunes account, the app will not let you download your purchased content.
You have to be in the country where you purchased the content in order to download it on your devices. So for example, if you bought the music while Australia was set as the country in iTunes and you are now trying to download content while US is the country in the app, it will not let you do that.
An easy solution to this issue is to simply change the country to what it was before. That should then let you download your purchased music tracks.
Tip 6. Refunded Purchases Are Not Available
If you made a purchase in the iTunes Store and then asked for a refund, the purchase will not be available for download in the store as it has simply been refunded to you. All of the refunded purchases are removed from your account by the company.
You may want to check your records to see if you have requested a refund for the purchase that you are currently trying to download on your device.
Tip 7. Toggle Sign-in/sign-out in iTunes
Sometimes, simply logging out of your iTunes account and logging back in after a few minutes resolves the issue for you. There could be a software glitch preventing you from accessing your songs and toggling the sign-in and out process will fix the issue for you.
In order to sign-out of the iTunes app on your computer, all you have to do is click on a single option and it will do the job for you.
Launch the iTunes app on your computer, click on Account at the top, and select the option that says Sign Out. You will be signed out of your iTunes account. Wait for a few minutes and then sign back in using the same account. You should then be able to view your purchased music.
We hope the above guide helps you download purchased music from iTunes so you can enjoy your songs on your devices. The guide also offers tips if you are unable to access your purchased content.
