AirPlay only works when you plan to share content to an Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled speaker or receiver, so check if your device is compatible. Meanwhile, make sure you have updated the software on iOS device and Apple TV to the latest version. Then please head to the detailed guide.

Situation 1: No AirPlay Options Are Available

When an AirPlay-enabled device is available, you should see AirPlay options in Control Center on your iPhone or iPad. But if there is no Airplay option available or a “Looking for Apple TV” Message Showing, follow the steps below.

  1. Restart your iPhone/iPad and Apple TV.
  2. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and check that you’re on the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV. To check the Wi-Fi network on your Apple TV, go to Settings > Network > Wi-Fi.
  3. On your Apple TV, make sure that AirPlay is turned on in Settings > AirPlay.

Situation 2: The AirPlay Device That You Need Is Not Showing

Basically, you should do the same thing as situation one when you can’t see the Airplay device that you need.

  1. Make sure that you plug in and turn on the AirPlay device that you want to stream to.
  2. If you’re streaming to Apple TV, make sure AirPlay is turned on in Settings > AirPlay.
  3. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and check that you’re on the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV. To check the Wi-Fi network on your Apple TV, go to Settings > Network > Wi-Fi.

Situation 3: iTunes Store or Third-party Content Can’t Be Streamed

  1. To stream iTunes Store content and some other types of content, your Apple TV needs a stable Internet connection. Go to Settings > Network > Wi-Fi and check your Wi-Fi connection and try again.
  2. To AirPlay rented content, wait for it to download completely. You can’t AirPlay rental content until it fully downloads.
  3. For the app you’re using, check its product page or website to see whether the app supports AirPlay. Without support for AirPlay video playback, an app might not be able to stream video.

Situation 4: No Sound Can’t Be Heard When Watching Video on Apple TV

  1. On both of your iPhone/iPad and Apple TV, check if the volume is turned up and remains not muted.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, check the Ring/Silent switch. If it’s set to silent, you’ll see an orange line. Toggle the switch to turn on the ringer.

Situation 5: Network Lags or Content Gets Interrupted

If you have a weak Wi-Fi signal or interference from a nearby device, like a microwave or baby monitor, follow these steps below.

  1. Make sure that you use the recommended settings for your Wi-Fi router.
  2. Move or turn off other devices that might cause interference.
