Q: Hello, I am getting iTunes error 3002 showing “The iPhone iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3002/16.xx)” every time I try to restore or update my iPhone. I have tried Shift + Restore as well as Shift + Upgrade combo but it doesnt work? Any ideas? Thanks.

Proxies, firewalls, and other network security measures can cause these errors. If necessary, find a different network connection to restore the device.

Method 4. Check Your Hosts File

Checking hosts file can help you to make sure that your computer could connect to the update server.

If you are in a Windows computer, please follow these steps from Microsoft Support Site to reset the hosts file back to default.

If you are in a Mac, try these following steps.

  1. Go to Finder > Applications > Utilities.
  2. Open Terminal, type “sudo nano  /private/etc/hosts” and press Return.
  3. Enter your computer log in password and press Return.
  4. After entering password, the Terminal will display hosts file. Navigate using the arrow keys and look for an entry containing “gs.apple.com”. Add the ‘# ’ and a space to the beginning of the gs.apple.com entry.

  5. Press Control-O to save the file.
  6. Press Return when asked for the filename.
  7. Press Control-X to exit the editor.
  8. Restart your Mac.
