If you have purchased a new iPhone X/Xs (Plus)and are eagerly looking to import all the contents (apps, photos, music, videos, messages, notes, settings and information) from your old iPhone, then keep reading this tutorial.
Creating and restoring of backup usually involves the use of iCloud and iTunes services. You can also opt for an automatic “Quick Start” method if both your devices are running on iOS 11 versions and above. Though there are other methods available but Apple’s own iTunes & iCloud services seems more reliable.
For better understanding, we have divided the entire process into three parts:
Part 1. Creating the backup of contents of your old iPhone
Part 2. Initializing your new iPhone
Part 3. Restoring the created backup in your new iPhone
So, let’s go through the process in detail.
You definitely don’t want to lose any of your contents which you have been hoarding in your old iPhone. Therefore, backing up your old device is the first thing that should be done when you switch iPhone to iPhone. We have two different options in preparing the backup which is described in detail below:
Method 1. Backup Using iTunes
iTunes is one of the most widely used tools for creating the backup but a Mac or Windows PC is a prerequisite as the backup is created locally. iTunes for backup completely transfers the contents of your old device in your system. So, go ahead and follow the steps to create the backup.
Backing up usually takes time and is dependent on the file size of the contents.
Method 2. Backup Using iCloud
iCloud is a better alternative of backing up all your contents over a Wi-Fi connection and can be easily done on the go. It’s better as compared to iTunes as it offers the flexibility to choose the information to be backed up.
The steps for creating the iCloud backup are explained below.
iCloud storage offers a storage capacity of 5 GB only. So, if you have files exceeding 5 GB to be backed up, you need to purchase a storage plan.
Once you have backed up your old iPhone, proceed with activating and initializing of the new iPhone. Go through the steps involved for the activation.
The data that has been backed up should now be restored in your new iPhone. Again the two methods which were earlier used for creating the backup will now be used again to restore it back into your new iPhone.
Method 1. Restoring Backup with iTunes
Under the “Apps & Data” screen, choose “Restore from iTunes Backup” from the available list and go through the following steps to complete the process.
Now wait till the process finishes. It may take some time depending upon the data to be restored.
Method 2. Restoring Backup with iCloud
Select “Restore from iCloud Backup” in the “Apps & Data” screen and follow the below-mentioned steps to finish restoring the backup.
Stay connected to the Wi-Fi as restoring the backup may take some time depending upon the file size.
Once the back has been restored you will have to follow a few additional steps to finally complete the process which is outlined below.
You can also switch from iPhone to iPhone using “Quick Start” if both of your devices are running on iOS 11 and above. This is the fastest method available which quickly transfers all your apps and data using a P2P protocol created when both the devices are held close to each other.
