Miracast is a projection tool for wireless connections from sending devices to display receivers.

When users project their devices using Miracast, they may receive a “Your PC or mobile device doesn’t support Miracast, so it can’t project wirelessly” error. They don’t know why this is happening, how to fix it, and if there are other alternatives to screen mirroring tools.

In this article, we are going to discuss the reasons for this error and the simple solutions for computer rookies. We will also recommend alternative tools of Miracast that can help mirror your screen.

Why Your Device Doesn’t Support Miracast

If you received the “Your PC or mobile device doesn’t support Miracast, so it can’t project wirelessly” error, it may be caused by the following scenarios:

1. Devices are not Connected to the Same WiFi Network

The Miracast can share the screen wirelessly, supporting the display of high-resolution pictures and high-definition video content from mobile phones to large screen devices such as TVs and computers without the help of any connecting cable.

However, it is necessary to connect your two devices to the same WiFi network. If both of your devices are not connected to the same WiFi network, or if one of them is connected to Ethernet, you may receive the Error.

2. The Device is Incompatible with Miracast

In fact, not all devices support Miracast and it is possible that your computer system is not compatible with it. You can try to verify the compatibility of your pc.

3. One of the Drives is Outdated

If the network driver is outdated or defective, you may encounter connection problems.

4. The Wireless Adapter is Forced to 5Ghz or 802.11blg

Your wireless adapter may be on 5GHz or 802.11blg, that’s why you encounter the Miracast error.

5. The Third-party Software Prevents the Connection

Any third-party VPN, such as Cisco AnyConnect, may affect your Miracast usage. If you have such software on your computer, you should disable them to use Miracast.

How to Fix Your PC Doesn’t Support Miracast Error

Now that we know the above reasons for the Error, let’s see how to fix them.

1. Ensure both Devices Connect to the Same WiFi Network

You should connect both of your devices to the same WiFi network to use Miracast successfully. If one of the devices is connected to Ethernet, it should be changed to the local connection.

Here’s how to check if your computer is WiFi enabled:

Step 1. Press Windows logo key + R to open Run.

Step 2. Type ms-settings:network-wifi and click OK to open the Settings menu.

Type "ms-settings:network-wifi" on the Text Box

Type “ms-settings:network-wifi” on the Text Box

Step 3. Click on the toggle to activate Wi-Fi.

Step 4. Then check if Wi-Fi is activated on the device.

2. Check the Compatibility of the Devices

Most modern Windows computers are compatible with Miracast. Here’s how to check if your computer is Miracast-compatible.

Step 1. Press  Windows logo key + R to open Run.

Step 2. Type dxdiag on the text box and click OK to open the Settings menu.

Step 5. Press the Windows logo key + Q and search for Notepad in Cortana.

Step 6. In Notepad, click on File > Open. Then open DxDiag.txt.

Step 7. Now you can know whether it’s available or not.  In the DxDiag document, Miracast says “Available, with HDCP.” If it’s unavailable, then your PC doesn’t support Miracast.

4. Change the Wireless Adapter to Auto

Another reason for the Miracast error is that users’ wireless adapter is forced to be set to 5Ghz or 802.11blg instead of being set to “Auto”.

Step 1. Press the Windows logo key + R to open Run.

Step 2. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK to open Device Manager.

Step 3. Expand the Network adapters menu, right-click on the Wireless Network Adapter and click on Properties.

Step 4. Go to the Advanced tab, select the Wireless Mode Selection property, and set it to Auto/Dual Band.

Step 2. Open the Privacy & Security tab and click on Windows Security.
