How to Set your Notes Password on iPhone/iPad

On iPhone and iPad, there are two methods to create passwords for your notes: through Settings or the Notes app.

In Settings, you can set up a password that applies to all locked notes. Here are the steps to do so:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down to find Notes. Tap on it > Tap Password.
  3. Tap on the account for which you choose to create a password.

  4. When prompted, enter your password in the Password and Verify sections. You can also create a Hint to remind you of which password you have chosen > Once finished, tap Done.

It’s highly recommended that you write down a hint. Otherwise, if you forget your password, you won’t be able to access your locked notes. Now that your password is set up for the account you selected. You can lock your notes in the Notes app and here’s how:

  1. Open the Notes app and go to the note you want to lock.
  2. Tap on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Then, tap Lock.
  4. When prompted, enter the password you created for the selected account. Then, tap OK.
  5. After step 4, a lock icon will show up in the upper right corner of your note. Tap the lock icon.

Now your note is locked, with contents hidden until you unlock it.

If you want to set up an individual password for each note, you can do so in the Notes app and simultaneously lock it. Please see the steps below:

  1. Follow steps 1-3 in the previous section about how to lock your notes in the Notes app.
  2. After you tap Lock, you can set up your password. Enter your password in the Password and Verify sections. You can also create a Hint to remind you of which password you have chosen.
  3. Once finished, tap Done.
  4. Then, a lock icon will show up in the upper right corner of your note. Tap the lock icon.
  5. Now this selected note is locked with a password of your choice.

How to Lock Notes on your iPhone with Face ID/Touch ID

For Apple devices with Face ID or Touch ID, you can also enable them for your notes. First, you need to follow the steps below to allow Notes to use your Face ID or Touch ID.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down to find Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode. Tap on it.
  3. When prompted, enter your device password.
  4. Tap on Other Apps.
  5. Toggle it on for Notes.

Now that you’ve allowed Notes to use Face ID or Touch ID, you can enable them for your notes, and here’s how:

  1. Follow the instructions in the previous section about how to create passwords. When you reach step 5 in Settings or step 2 in the Notes app, you’ll see an option that says “Use Face ID” or “Use Touch ID”. Toggle it on to enable Face IDor Touch ID for your notes.
  2. Then follow the steps afterward to lock your notes.

If you don’t choose to enable your Face ID or Touch ID when you create the passwords but still want to do so afterward, you can still follow the steps above to do so. However, you will be asked to enter the password you created before.

How to Unlock Notes with Face ID/Touch ID

Once the Face ID or Touch ID is enabled, it’s easy to unlock your notes with them. Simply tap on the lock icon in the upper right corner of your selected note. When your face or fingerprint is recognized, your note will be unlocked.
