Here’s what you should do if you forget your Notes password and want to reset it on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Go to Settings and then go to Notes.
  2. Tap “Password”.
  3. Select the account for which you wish to reset the password.

  4. Tap “Reset Password”.
  5. When prompted, enter your device passcode.

  6. Your device will ask you to confirm your intent to reset the password. Tap “Reset Password” again if you’re sure you want to change the password for Notes from now on*.
  7. Enter your new password in the “Password” and “Verify” sections. You can also create a Hint to remind you of which password you have chosen. It’s highly recommended that you write down a hint. Otherwise, if you forget your password, you won’t be able to access your locked notes.
  8. Once finished, tap Done.

Once you select “Reset Password” in step 6, your old Notes password will be removed even if you choose to cancel in the following steps. So if you’re not sure whether you want to reset your password yet, select “Cancel” in this step.

If you see the “Reset Password” option on your iPhone is grayed out, it probably means you have already removed your old Notes password. You can simply set up a new password.

Please note that even if you successfully reset your Notes password, you still need your old password to access the notes you locked before. The new password can only be used for notes you wish to lock in the future. So if you find that you can’t open certain notes with your new password, it doesn’t mean that the Notes password reset isn’t working.
